Ljótipollur means “ugly puddle” in Icelandic but it’s actually a lustrous turquoise lake ringed by the crimson ridge of an extinct caldera. We find this joke hilarious. The singletrack for our third and final day varies from rocky and technical to hard-packed and fast as we work our way through a unique area of the highlands that is punctuated with a multitude of lakes, rivers, and glaciers. At the day’s end, the sunset drive back to Reykjavik gives us a chance to celebrate and reflect on a journey well worth taking.
