The Lava Trails: Mountain bike day trip

The Lava trails are a great way to sample mountain biking in Iceland. A big variety of cross country trails in a moonscape terrain close to the capital city Reykjavik. Rental of quality full-suspension mountain bike with dropper post included. Suitable for all active outdoor people. The trip can be tailored to beginners to intermediate riders.

This trip takes place at a popular recreation area for Reykjavikians, and for good reason. We ride 10-20km mix of man made and natural trails. Trails that showcase the jagged volcanic formations and mossy lavafields. Guides will tailor each trip to clients’ abilities. This trip is suitable for beginners through intermediate riders. Fun adventure day out. The trip starts and ends in Reykjavik.

You can do a lot in one day in Iceland! In summer: Days are long, almost 24hrs of daylight and we recommend using the bright nights well. Find information on what to wear and have a look at Icebike Adventures picture gallery from our trips. Grab the popcorn, sit back and enjoy some of your biking videos from Iceland. Last but not least, get some practical information on your trips and what to expect when riding in Iceland.

Had an extra day in Reykjavik and signed up for the Lava Trails ride. Asta picked me up in town and at the shop we picked up bikes and headed to a nearby trail. The bikes were great (Scott Spark 27.5+ bikes) and the Lava Trails were fun and engaging but not too difficult riding. Was awesome to get on a bike and explore outside of the town. Even though we had marginal weather the experience was well worth it and it was cool to explore the volcanic landscape. I'm already thinking about when I can come back for a longer biking trip!

When things go wrong, Icebike Adventures make it right! Sometimes things that are completely outside of your control go wrong - it's how you respond that decides who's the best. I say Icebike Adventures are absolutely the best. I'd booked to ride the Lava Trails, and ended up grouped with a team who had seriously over-stated their abilities on a mountainbike. Icebike immediately recognised that the group could not safely ride the route that had been planned for the day. Without any fuss or embarrassment the ride was re-directed to a much easier trail. The ride was brilliant! A nice, easy roll-along cruise through beautiful countryside - although I still managed one or two graceless dismounts and totally ruined my trousers :D I even got to ride up (and then down) a volcano! Þórdís swapped easily between roles - knowledgeable tour guide one minute, then the next minute making sure the guys at the back were still having fun on their bikes. The ride could too easily have been dull for me, or terrifying for the team of newbies. Instead Magne, Þórdís, and Ásta took a potentially bad situation and turned it into one of the best rides ever. Five stars Icebike! And if you are ever in Tasmania, drop me an email - I know where the good tracks are!

Tordis was my guide for the one on one ride the afternoon of 31 May, one day before my birthday. It could NOT have been a better gift from my wife! The lava landscape is beautiful to see and difficult to ride, with lots of small pops and drops. Along the way is a short hike-a-bike up the face of an inactive volcano, including a ride around the rim and then a drop into the crater, following the washes created by lava flow. The ride ends on a friendly, but challenging descent on a rocky face to a fast flowing sweep to the parking lot. Many stops were made for photos and I still didn't take enough. Ask for Tordis and you can thank me later. The rental bike was in great shape and included a dropper post and 'normal' braking setup, which is nice for someone from the States.
