Þórsmörk is the ``Garden Of Thor`` MTB All Mountain Paradise.

This 3 day trip covers challenging terrain through Þórsmörk nature reserve. The area is 2,5 hours drive from Reykjavík. Our base will be at small mountain huts reachable only by crossing unbridged rivers.  Þórsmörk is sheltered from weather by glaciers on three sides. Hence the summer season starts earlier in Þórsmörk than other highland areas. Weather is generally milder in Þórsmörk than in neighbouring areas. We make a quick stop at the famous waterfall “Seljalandsfoss” on the way to the base in Húsadalur valley. *No need to bring a group, solo riders welcome.

Þórsmörk trails:

Icebike team works on designing and building MTB trails in Þórsmörk.  Trails are shared with hikers.  The Þórsmörk trails feature in a video Icebike worked on with YETI bikes.

Post ride:

A typical evening in Þórsmörk: Enjoy a well deserved meal. Buffet style in the restaurant. Post dinner: Crack open a cold one and gather around the campfire. Share stories with fellow riders before heading to the small cabins we overnight. There are warm showers and a small geothermal hot tub and sauna in the area. Free (slow) wifi in the restaurant.

The area:

Two words:  Magnificent views. The stunning views from the mountaintops of Þórsmörk are what make the area so unique. Þórsmörk is diverse.  Black sand river beds are the backdrop for a wide variety of vegetation, much of which unique to the area.  Þórsmörk has many interesting natural rock formations and other worldly canyons. The area has been featured in films and tv series such as Game of Thrones.

If you want more information on the cabins we use, check this page out. Find information on what to wear and have a look at Icebike Adventures picture gallery from our trips. Grab the popcorn, sit back and enjoy some of your biking videos from Iceland. Last but not least, get some practical information on your trips and what to expect when riding in Iceland.

``Iceland was to me, the most beautiful place I have ever seen on earth. This vast terrain offered epic riding with landscapes to steal your attention at every turn. The exposure makes you weak at the knees and flow that makes you overcome it.``

Day 1

Lava ride and superjeeping

We begin our adventure in true Icelandic fashion – our superjeep shuttles us out of Reykjavik towards the exceptional backcountry of Þórsmörk, we ride the Edge trail on the way out the before we start fording wild glacial rivers that are impassable by regular 4×4’s. On the way we are treated to The Edge trail, a local’s favourite that traces the twists and turns of a lava flow. In the evening we have the option of an easy pedal or a short hike up a mountain to a scenic viewpoint. After a delicious dinner you can indulge yourself with a sauna or simply a cold one by the campfire.

Day 2

Thors Garden

Our ride today takes us through ever-changing ecosystems, each with their own unique beauty. Here, birch trees and grassy meadows are a contrast to the volcanic terrain of Day 1. But this is no scenic jaunt, hike-a-bike sections and deep river crossings will keep us honest and work up a mean appetite for a fantastic Icelandic dinner at our backcountry hut accommodations.

Day 3

Goðaland

Our goal today; Eyjafjallajökull, the temperamental young volcano whose last eruption in 2010 halted all air travel over Europe. A challenging climb up the flanks of this glacier-topped volcano rewards us with stunning views from the top as well as a riotously fun singletrack descent that will leave you wanting more. This is truly a day to remember. After a challenging day biking we hop on the superjeep for a 2,5 hour drive back to Reykjavík, there in time for dinner.  SKÁL!

Trip of a lifetime! My husband and I booked the 3 day Thors Garden trip with Icebikes. We spent the first half day riding the lava trail outside or Reykjavik, which was a great. We then packed up the super jeep and headed to Thorsmork. The super jeep tour on the way was almost worth the cost of the trip. We stopped to see the Seljalandsfoss waterfall on our was, as well as other notable areas of interest and crossed a couple of rivers. All super fun! The stay at the Volcano Huts in Throsmork was great. Good food, nice accommodations and an interesting group of people also staying at the huts. We went for an evening ride the first day with beautiful views of the area. Day 2 we packed a lunch went for a longer ride, again with spectacular views. The trails were challenging, a fair amount of hike a bike, but totally worth it for the descents! In the afternoon we took the super jeep to see another beautiful waterfall. The last day we drove back towards Reykjavik and biked down into the Reykjadalur valley. We soaked in the Reykjadalur Hot Springs before continuing down to end the ride at a cafe for a beer and coffee.Honestly, this was one of the best trips I have ever been on! Our guide David took such good care of us. He was knowledgable about biking, the surrounding area/trails, as well as Icelandic history. We were definitely challenged by the trails (much steeper than in Vermont), but we always felt like David had our safety and riding ability in mind when choosing what trails to ride. We could not recommend Icebike enough. We would have been completely lost and probably still wandering the Icelandic countryside without David!

Thorsmork Private Tour — Awesome We had a fantastic experience with Icebike. My buddy and I couldn’t make our schedules work with any of the standard trips, so Ásta set up a custom itinerary for us. We enjoyed the Land Rover trip out to Thorsmork and the trails were unbelievable. Good combination of scenery and sport. Our guide Runar picked trails to challenge our abilities, and we learned a ton about Iceland’s history, economy, and geography. On the last day we rode The Edge trail before heading to airport. Good food, interesting accommodations. Hot tub and sauna at the end of the ride. EVERYTHING is taken care of by the pros at Icebike. Bring your own helmet, pedals, and pack and you’ll be more comfortable. The bikes themselves are top quality.

World Class Company for a Once in a Lifetime Trip Bottom Line: Icebike Adventures provided a once-in-a-lifetime, 5 day, bucket list worthy mountain bike trip for 11 high maintenance guys that was nearly flawlessly executed from start to finish. From the planning stages in November 2016 through the actual trip at the end of May 2017, Icebike was professional, accommodating, responsive and thorough, providing a fantastic overall experience from beginning to end. For anyone looking to experience Iceland’s astonishing beauty be bike, be it an easy cross country ride or harrowing single track adventure, Icebike will create and optimize the perfect experience for you.

The Details: 10 of my local mountain bike friends and I began planning a trip to Iceland for the beginning of summer 2017. While all capable riders, my group had a mix of both technical ability and fitness and I wanted to make sure that the trip I put together would meet the needs of the full range of riders. After exhaustively researching local Icelandic tour providers and mountain bike guides for such a trip, the body of evidence suggested that if we wanted an epic trip capable of accommodating our group, Icebike Adventures was the clear standout. I was actually taken aback and a bit skeptical of the universally positive reviews online so I decided that I should dig a bit further. As a next step, I contacted people that had used Icebike on individual tours, group tours, single day tours, and multi-day tours. All had rave reviews. In addition, ALL of the professional mountain bike video shoots in Iceland have used Icebike for logistical support and I even spoke with some of the professional mountain bike riders about their experience with Icebike. Icebike was the clear winner for both experience and capability. I was sold.I contacted Icebike in November 2016 about the possibility of a trip of our size and Asta, my point of contact, provided a rough outline of our trip at the outset and promptly and with detail answered every little question that we had – from technical difficulty of the rides to fitness requirements to gear selection. By December, our trip was planned in nearly every detail all we had to do was wait for the calendar pages to turn and for the end of May 2017 to arrive.Though I planned our travel arrangements and lodging while in Reykjavik (they will do this for you, if you wish), Asta provided contacts, opinions and suggestions to make sure our travel and accommodations that were not supported by Icebike went off without a hitch. Her suggestions and our experience was flawless. The trip itself consisted of two day trips out of Reykjavik with a subset of our group participating, followed by a 3 day trip into Thorsmork with our full group. This was by my design to accommodate my group members’ different travel dates; I believe Icebike can do a full 5 day trip as well, if you wish.We were met on day one by our guides, David and Petur, as well as Siggi and Benedict who came along to support the day. We were each paired and fitted with the 2017 Scott Genius 750 full suspension mountain bikes (with dropper posts) that would be ours for the week. While not as light as what we are accustomed to riding back home, these bikes were capable, durable and top notch for what we could expect for a rental fleet. Day one consisted of Icebike’s “Tectonic” daytrip. A technically challenging, but picturesque ride through the lava fields about an hour outside of Reykjavik. In addition to being challenging (both from a technical and fitness perspective), this day allowed our guides to assess our group members’ limits and shaped the riding and route plans for the rest of the days ahead.Day two was “The Steamer” an evening ride among the geothermal vents in the hills outside of Reykjavik. In addition to the requisite stop for a soak in a trail side stream heated by the local volcanic activity, the ride was marked by short challenging climbs followed by smooth flowy singletrack as well as some steep challenging descents. Our guides did an excellent job of leading us down the perfect lines into the valley below.Day three through five we travelled to the Highlands of Thorsmork via our guide’s customized Land Rover Defenders to ride in some of the most amazing, rugged, lush, landscapes any of us had ever seen. We packed each day to its fullest riding as much as we could handle and stayed overnight in some very basic, but comfortable huts located in the center of the trail system. Every turn in this region reveals another stunning view and equally stunning singletrack. Every uphill effort (either by pedal or by hike-a-bike) was rewarded with a stellar downhill that kept us whooping, laughing and giggling with glee all the way down. We saw an endless string of waterfalls, wild sheep, jagged mountains, glacial vistas and vivid green moss covered valleys. Our guides perfectly balanced our desire for continuous riding with the desire to stop and capture the moment in photos. David and Petur were expert mechanics efficiently changing / trouble shooting each one of the 25+ mechanical events that we had (flat tires, blown cassette, ripped off derailleur, broken hub), none of which sidelined any member of our group for more than a short time. And most importantly, David and Petur fit perfectly into our group tolerating the likely idiosyncrasies that come with a group our size and entertaining us while we weren’t riding.By the end of the trip, we were left with vivid memories of amazing trails, views, climbs, downhills and memories with nearly nothing going wrong. While I cannot promise that the same will be the case for every trip, I can promise that if you choose to go with Icebike Adventures, they will do everything in their power to make sure that your trip is as amazing as it can possibly be.Bottom Line: Icebike Adventures, Asta, David and Petur quite literally gave us a flawless trip of a lifetime.

Icelandic adventure If I could rate Icebike higher than excellent...I would! What an amazing three day tour in the Porsmörk. From the beginning, communication with Ásta was great. Information and tips were provided in a timely manner. Our guide was awesome. Pétur knew the trails and was an excellent guide. His massive Land Rover Defender 110 was a hoot to ride around in and ford unbridged rivers with. Killer playlist to go along with the Landy as well. Icebike is the real deal if you want to do some real mountain biking. You will ride epic singletrack and make the most amazing memories. I highly recommend Icebike!
