Heidmork

Nature reserve in the backyard of Reykjavík where the locals ride.

Heiðmörk - Where Reykjavík Goes to Ride

Heiðmörk Nature Reserve sits just south of Reykjavík, and if you ask any local rider where they go after work, chances are this is it. A network of trails winds through ancient lava fields, birch forests, and past volcanic craters, all within minutes of the city. It is the kind of place that does not look like much on a map but keeps pulling you back.

The Riding

The trails here range from smooth gravel paths to flowing single-track through moss-covered lava. The terrain is not extreme, but it is varied. Short climbs open up to views across the reserve, and the lava formations create natural features that keep things interesting. On a good day, you can link together a solid 30-kilometre loop without riding the same section twice.

For riders passing through Reykjavík before or after an Icebike trip, Heiðmörk is the perfect place to spin the legs and get a feel for Icelandic terrain. For locals, it is simply home turf.

Beyond the Bike

Heiðmörk is also home to Rauðhólar, a cluster of striking red pseudo-craters formed thousands of years ago. The landscape shifts constantly, from dense birch woodland to open lava fields to quiet ponds reflecting the sky. It is a reminder that in Iceland, even the city's backyard has something extraordinary.

Heiðmörk connects to Lundur Trailcenter via a 10 km route on asphalt, gravel and single-tracks.
