Reykjanes

Epic gravel-biking routes across lava fields and rugged volcanic terrain.

Reykjanes - Riding Through a Living Volcano

The Reykjanes Peninsula has erupted twelve times since 2021, making it one of the most volcanically active places on earth right now. For gravel riders, that means something extraordinary. Fresh lava fields, new terrain forming in real time, and roads that cut through landscapes unlike anything else you will find on two wheels.

The Riding

The routes here cross hard-packed lava roads from the outskirts of Reykjavík towards Fagradalsfjall. The surface is volcanic soil at its best, fast and firm when compacted, with the kind of grip that rewards confident riding. Between the lava fields, the coastline opens, offering views across the Atlantic to the horizon.

This is Day 1 of our HEKLA gravel trip, where riders head out through old and new lava before stopping for lobster soup in a seaside village that was fully evacuated in 2023 and is only now rebuilding.

A Landscape That Is Still Changing

Reykjanes is not a destination you visit to see what happened long ago. The ground here is still warm. New fissures have reshaped the peninsula repeatedly over the past few years, and the area around Grindavík remains a place where geology is happening in front of you. For riders who want to feel the raw power of Iceland up close, there is nowhere quite like it.

Reykjanes is part of our HEKLA gravel tour. For a private ride through the peninsula, get in touch.
