When to Visit

The best time to visit Iceland for biking is June through September, when the highlands are open, and the weather is at its most welcoming. The Icebike Trail Centers are open from May through September.

June - Endless Daylight

June is magical. Daylight lasts around the clock, so there is no need to rush. The sun barely sets, giving you endless hours on the trail. Summer temperatures typically range from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius (41 to 59°F), though warm sunny days do happen. Come prepared for cool conditions even in peak summer.

July and August - Prime Season

The highlands open in late June to early July and are rideable through mid-September. This is when you have access to the most trails for mountain biking and gravel. July and August tend to be the warmest and driest months, making this the prime window for riding.

September - Autumn Colours

September brings cooler temperatures and the first hints of autumn colour in the landscape. The highlands are still rideable early in the month, making it a beautiful and quieter time to visit.

A Note on the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are not visible during the summer months - the sky simply never gets dark enough. To see them, you need to visit between late September and March, when Iceland has proper darkness. Summer visitors trade the aurora for something equally special: the midnight sun.
