Fat Biking in Iceland
The Fatbike Era: A Chapter in Our Story
We get asked about fatbikes a lot! While they hold a special place in our history, we have retired our fantastic fleet of Salsa bikes, mostly due to the ever-changing snow conditions in our biking area.

How We Used to Do It
Back in the day, "fatties" were our go-to for exploring in winter. With the massive 4 or 5-inch tyres, we could “float" over snow-covered lava fields; they were the ultimate "monster trucks" of the bike world, allowing us to go where traditional mountain bikes simply sank.
Fatbikes created great adventures, and there is something undeniably fun about the "buoyant" feeling of a fatbike. It was slow, steady, and practically unstoppable.

Why We Retired the Fleet
As much as we loved our fatbikes, technology eventually caught up and gave us something even better. Here’s why we decided to retire our fatbike fleet:
The Rise of the e-bike MTB: Once high-quality electric mountain bikes arrived, we mounted studded tyres and went out to play.
Unreliable snow conditions: We like to deliver world-class adventures, no excuses. With ever-changing weather in Iceland, it is a challenge to deliver a great fatbike adventure unless there is ample time for riders to head far out to find the best snow.
We still have a lot of respect for fatbikes, but for the best "smiles per mile" in Iceland today, we’ve found that our modern e-bike MTB lineup is the winner.
