Electric vs. Unplugged: Which Bike is Right for Your Iceland Trip?
The short answer: Both are excellent, but your choice depends on the terrain and your goals. Here is how we break it down:
Why go with electric?
We recommend electric mountain bikes for most family and group trips.
Level the Playing Field: E-bikes allow groups with different fitness levels to stay together and enjoy the ride.
Cover More Ground: You can see more of Iceland’s vast landscapes in a shorter amount of time.
Built for the Trails: Areas like Reykjadalur have routes specifically designed for e-bikes, making steep climbs part of the fun rather than a chore.
Why go with Unplugged?
Traditional bikes are still the winner in some areas:
Playful Handling: If you want a lighter, more agile bike for technical descents, unplugged is the way to go.
Hike-a-Bike Sections: In areas where the trail disappears, and you have to carry your bike, you’ll be glad you aren't hauling a 25kg e-bike.

The "Highland" Rule: Avoid Electric for Bike-packing
We do not recommend e-bikes for solo adventures or multi-day bike-packing in the remote Highlands.
The Battery Risk: If you run out of juice in the Highlands, you are left with a very heavy bike in a place where the nearest charging point could be hundreds of kilometres away.
Self-Sufficiency: For true backcountry exploration where electricity is non-existent, stay unplugged.
Which one is for you?
Pick an E-bike if: You're on a guided day trip, riding with family, or want to maximise the "scenery-to-effort" ratio.
Pick Unplugged if: You’re an experienced rider looking for a technical challenge or heading deep into the wilderness for several days.
