What Bike to Choose for Iceland
Choose the Right Bike for Your Route
Iceland is rugged. Roads and trails range from smooth paved highways to rocky highland tracks that will punish an underprepared bike. Match your bike to your terrain before anything else.
Gravel Roads and F-Roads
A gravel bike is the ideal choice for Iceland's highland gravel roads. Look for wide tyres with strong sidewalls, at least 40mm, to handle the loose surface. A reinforced sidewall matters here as sharp volcanic gravel is hard on tyres.
Single-tracks and Mountain Trails
For single-tracks, a full-suspension mountain bike is the right tool. Iceland's lava fields and rocky trails demand a good travel front and rear to ride with confidence in technical terrain.
Getting Your Bike Iceland-Ready
Tyres
Fit the widest tyre your frame allows with a robust casing. A tubeless setup or puncture-resistant tyres will save you a lot of roadside repair time in remote areas.

Drivetrain and Brakes
Check your chain, cassette, and brake pads before you leave home. Iceland's wet, gritty conditions accelerate wear.

Spare Parts to Bring
Two or more spare tubes (or tubeless plugs and sealant)
A spare derailleur hanger specific to your bike model
Brake pads and spare chain links
A basic multi-tool and chain tool
Bike shops are few and far between outside Reykjavik. Stock up on spares before heading into the highlands. Parts for less common bike brands may simply not be available in Iceland.
Icebike offers full-suspension mountain bikes, e-bike full-suspension MTBs, gravel bikes, and hardtails. Many come in both aluminium and carbon options. Check out our rentals.
