Thingvellir National Park
The UNESCO site of the Tectonic plates in Iceland.
Thingvellir (Þingvellir) - Riding Between Two Continents
Thingvellir National Park sits in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart, about 2 centimetres a year. It is one of the few places on earth where you can see this happening on land. Thingvellir is one of the key destinations on the famous Golden Circle.
Experiencing Thingvellir on a bike: we pedal through the winding asphalt on gravel bikes or pedal to the top of Mt. Hengill on an e-bike MTB for views over the entire area, including stunning Þingvellir lake, home to the famous Silfra dive site.
The View From Above
The climb to Olkelduhals, a multicoloured ridge above the park, is one of the highlights of our Tectonic e-bike MTB trip. From the top, Lake Thingvallavatn stretches out below, framed by mountains on every side. The descent follows the contours of the rift valley through birch woodland and volcanic terrain. It is the kind of ride where you earn the view, then ride back through it.
More Than Geology
Thingvellir is also where Icelanders founded the Althing in 930 AD, the world's oldest parliament. For over 800 years, people gathered here to settle disputes, make laws, and shape the country. The site still carries that weight. Riding through it, you feel the history in the landscape as much as the geology.
