Mountain Biking in Iceland: A Guide to the Best Riding Areas
Iceland is a premier destination for the advanced single-track rider. But if you know where to look, it offers incredible experiences for all levels. The most iconic trails can be technical, partnering with a local guide and using shuttle services will help you make the most of your time on the island.
Below are our three favourite mountain biking locations. Read through to the end. There is more riding around the island, and we'll share that too.

Gear, Bikes and Spare Parts
If you bring your own bike, make sure to pack brand-specific spares. There are several bike shops in Reykjavík, but outside the capital, they are few and far between.
Not sure whether to bring your own bike or rent? Read our guide here.
The Main MTB Areas
Mt. Hengill - Tectonic, Steamer and Geo Trails
Mt. Hengill is the heartbeat of Iceland's single-track scene. Technical trails, epic views and easy access from Reykjavík make this the go-to area for riders looking to maximise their time. Plan for one to three days of riding.
You can rent a bike or bring your own. We operate the Icebike Trailcenter in Reykjadalur, right in the area.
Great for: World-class single-tracks through active geothermal terrain, with access to great hotels and restaurants. Works perfectly for anything from an afternoon ride to a multi-day trip.

Fjallabak & Landmannalaugar
One of Iceland's most stunning nature reserves and a truly special place to ride. For Highland riding, we strongly recommend going with a local guide. Routes are unmarked, and rangers actively patrol the area to ensure mountain bikers stay off hiking trails.
Great for: Remote Highland riding, raw volcanic landscapes and a genuine sense of adventure.

Þórsmörk (Thorsmork)
Glaciers on three sides, birch woodland and black sand. Thorsmork is a natural wonder that Icelanders hold dear. Access requires a 4x4 superjeep and river crossings without bridges. This is exactly the kind of place where a local guide makes all the difference.
Great for: Riders who want the full Iceland experience: wild, remote and unforgettable.

What to Expect in Iceland
Raw nature. Endless single-tracks. Embracing the elements. Stunning days with 24 hours of daylight in June. Great food. Friendly locals.
Iceland rewards riders who come prepared and stay open to what the terrain gives them.
What Iceland Is Not
Even though the Icebike team builds small skills parks for local kids, there is no large man-made bike park here. Our friends up north in Akureyri have started building a small one, but don't expect anything like the Alps or Whistler.
Iceland is, and we mean this as a compliment, still about natural, technical single-tracks with limited man-made infrastructure. That is exactly what makes it special.
