Gravel Cycling on Iceland highland backroads:
Want to explore Iceland highlands on a gravel bike? The Hekla gravel tour is suitable for adventurous cyclists. For riders with experience in gravel, road or cross country biking. Pedal through challenging climbs and fun descents. Add some creek crossings that are guaranteed to leave your shoes squishing. Nothing compares to exploring a country by your own physical strength. Dormant volcanoes and moss covered lava fields surround Icelands ever changing gravel roads. Cycle through mysterious moonscapes and before a soak in a geothermal hot pool. The Iceland highlands are a gravel cyclists paradise. This trip showcases Iceland highland dirt roads. We ride cabin to cabin with support of SAG vehicle. The rewards for hard work pedalling are the stunning views and great meals.
With Icelandic weather being super unpredictable we rely on our guides to have plan A,B & C for any day of the trip. Our guides are experienced mountaineers with extensive knowledge of the Icelandic Highlands. In Autumn 2018 we created a trip for the super talented guys at Global Cycling Network. This trip covers the same roads, click the links to see the trip we designed for GCN.
If you want more information on the cabins we use, check this page out. Find information on what to wear and have a look at Icebike Adventures picture gallery from our trips. Grab the popcorn, sit back and enjoy some of your biking videos from Iceland. Last but not least, get some practical information on your trips and what to expect when riding in Iceland.

To the highlands
We meet at Icebike Base for a briefing and get the bikes ready. First part of the trip is a scenic two hour drive towards highlands. First ride: named “Cold Valley” the views are a glacier on one side and moonland vistas on the other. We make our way through the curvy gravel roads towards national park Þingvellir. Support vehicle available if riders need a break. Post ride we drive further towards the highlands, have dinner and head to the B&B where we overnight. An optional evening ride to see natural wonders Gullfoss & Geysir in the off hours, away from any crowds.
Otherworldly
Breakfast buffet at B&B before we hop on the support vehicle that brings us to the highlands. Grab your bike and get ready for a ride of a lifetime. Cruise through endless lava soil backroads. Landscapes change at every turn. Remote. Otherwordly Icelandic vistas at their best. We ride all the way to cabins in the middle of the highlands where we get a well deserved dinner followed by a campfire.
Pedal through
Breakfast at the cabins, get ready to pedal through lavafields near volcano Hekla. Make your way through curvy backroads, challenging uphills and descents towards civilisation. Hop on support vehicle post ride for a 2 hour drive back to Reykjavík, there in time for dinner. Thanks for a great backcountry gravel riding experience.
